The first 100,000 patients to file with the government’s drug watchdog are getting a free sample of the erectile dysfunction medication Viagra.
Pfizer, which is also part of the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, is running a campaign to stop its Viagra drugs.
Pfizer’s Viagra, whose active ingredient is sildenafil, was made by a British company called GlaxoSmithKline and is available without a prescription to a population of about 100 million people.
Viagra has been linked to strokes and heart attacks in more than 1.4 million people.
The drug has been used by more than 25 million men worldwide since 1998, when it was launched.
A spokesman for GlaxoSmithKline said: ‘We are in the process of getting more information on this drug.
‘We have been trying to reach out to the pharmaceutical industry in this way, but all of our efforts have failed, and that failure has led to the current list of men taking Viagra.
‘Viagra has been used by more than 250 million men worldwide since 1998, with a rate of approximately 5 per million people, but it has been a relatively small number.
‘There have been many attempts to stop it, but it is still in its early stages.
‘There is no way to know how many men are currently taking it.’
The decision to ban Viagra in the UK comes as the drugs have faced a growing number of complaints from patients about side effects.
The drug is nicknamed ‘Viagra’ for its quick effect and high blood pressure.
It was originally developed to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, but it has been shown to lower cholesterol and triglycerides.
It is also known to lower blood pressure in people with diabetes and high blood pressure.
The Viagra patent was in force in Britain from the early 1980s, and the US Food and Drug Administration approved the drug in 1998.
The company said it had ‘full knowledge’ of its drugs and was looking for a way to ‘‘help’ the public to find a cheaper alternative’.

‘We have been able to file complaints, but we are in the process of going to the courts to decide what is appropriate and what is not.
‘Our lawyers are also looking into how the Viagra affected the lives of some of our patients.
‘The first complaint is based on the very very serious and very serious side effects of Viagra.’
